CLAREMONT, CA - Sophomore Marissa Stamler's fifth goal of the game came with 10 seconds left in the second sudden-death overtime period and the George Washington women's water polo team beat Fresno Pacific, 11-10, in the first game of the Claremont Convergence Saturday.
GW improved to 5-9 on the season after surviving two full overtime periods and one sudden-death session against the Sunbirds. Freshman goalkeeper Charlotte Schou, who made her first collegiate start, had 11 saves to earn her first victory.
The Colonials led 6-4 at halftime and took a three-goal lead in the third period, but the Sunbirds scored five of the last seven goals of regulation to send the game to overtime. Each team scored in the first overtime period, but remained tied at 10-10 through the second.
GW missed a pair of penalty shots in the first sudden-death period, but kept Fresno Pacific at bay until Stamler's game-winner. Senior Greta Pedraza added two goals for the Colonials.
GW plays Whittier in Saturday's late game at 4:00 pm PT.
