WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington University women's tennis defeated Towson University, 5-2, Friday afternoon at the tennis courts on the Mount Vernon Campus in Washington, DC. The win ended a five-match losing streak for the Colonials and improved their overall record to 5-5 this year.

It was GW's second win in the 2007-2008 season over the Tigers, including their 4-1 win back in September at the George Mason Invitational in Fairfax, VA.

In Friday's action, GW started strong and claimed the doubles point with a sweep of all three doubles matches, including a victory from the No. 1 team, Nadia Demidenko and Kendall Swenson, 8-4.

In singles play, No. 1 player Kendall Swenson took an early 5-0 lead in the first set, but was forced to retire because of injury and as a result, had to forfeit the opening point. The rest of the GW players rallied, however, and won the next four points to claim the match.

Wins in the singles competition came from Nadia Demidenko, Jennifer Hirsh, Tracy Stecko and Verena Knoedler. Demidenko improved her overall mark to 12-3, including 4-1 in dual-matches.

George Washington takes to the road next week, traveling to Florida for a pair of matches. On Monday, Mar. 17, they play at Florida Atlantic and then face Lynn the following day.
