Softball Keeps A-10 Tournament Hopes Alive, Defeats Fordham, 3-2

May 2, 2008

Box Score

WASHINGTON, DC - Behind senior Chrysanthi Halkiotis' two base hits, and another pitching gem by sophomore Amanda Gabriel, the GW softball team defeated Fordham, 3-2 Friday afternoon at Mount Vernon Softball Field. The victory keeps the Colonials' slim Atlantic 10 Tournament hopes alive, with a win tomorrow on Senior Day, bringing them one-step closer.

After four scoreless innings, GW erupted for three runs on three hits, and got the added benefit of a Fordham fielding error. Redshirt sophomore Elisa Van Kirk led off the rally with a one-out bloop single to center field. A sharp single to left field by sophomore Amanda Holst followed just after, as Van Kirk was replaced by pinch runner, Samantha Long. Long was then forced out as senior Caroline Howe reached on a fielder's choice to the shortstop. With two outs, Halkiotis singled through the left side, her second hit of the afternoon, and thus becoming the second Colonial to record 150 career base hits. Holst, who advanced to third on the single, and Howe, who also advanced to second, scored later as junior Tori Sensi reached on a costly two-run error by the first baseman. After Sensi advanced on a wild pitch, and a walk issued to freshman Katie Terrazas, senior Jackie Yaniga was then plunked by an offering by Rams starting pitcher Allison Twarowski, scoring Halkiotis from third.

Fordham got two runs right back in it's half of the sixth, cutting the lead to 3-2, but were unable to tie the game, giving GW the victory.

Halkiotis also doubled earlier in the game, extending her single-season doubles record to 16. With the double, she also tied former Colonial Elana Meyers for first place on the GW all-time doubles list with 32 career two-base hits.

Gabriel pitched her 20th complete game of the season, improving her record to 11-17. The native of Fullerton, CA allowed just one earned run on six hits, while striking out five.

Twarowski got the loss allowing no earned runs in five innings, before giving way to Nicole Ayres who pitched a perfect sixth inning.

The same two teams will meet tomorrow on Senior Day at 12:00 pm at the Mount Vernon Softball Complex. The regular season finale will be the last home game for seniors Colleen Kegler, Katie Miller, Jackie Yaniga, Caroline Howe, and Chrysanthi Halkiotis.

Game Notes: The victory was GW's 25th all-time Atlantic 10 victory ... Head Coach Kim Staehle now has 35 victories at GW, the most all-time at the University ... The victory was GW's first ever win against Fordham.
