Women's Soccer Battles Massachusetts to a 2-2 Draw

Nov. 4, 2007

Box Score

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington women's soccer twice fought back from one-goal deficits to earn a 2-2 tie with Massachusetts in an Atlantic 10 Conference match early Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field as the Colonials completed their 2007 season.

The Colonials, who recorded a draw for the first time since the 2004 campaign, finished this year with an overall record of 8-9-1, 3-7-1 in A-10 play. The Minutewomen finish the regular season 9-6-2, 4-6-2 in the conference.

UMass, who owns a 15-5-3 record all-time against GW, took the first lead of the match, in the 39th minute. After a Colonials' foul, the Minutewomen were rewarded with a free kick and they took full advantage of the opportunity, as Jenny Roehrig buried a shot in the lower right corner of the net after two defections for the early 1-0 lead that remained through halftime.

GW drew even in 58th minute, by way of a penalty kick. Junior Kerry Philbin (Herndon, VA/Bishop Denis J. O'Connell) took the shot and converted, netting her second goal of the season.

That tie would not last, however, as the home team retook the lead less than a minute later. Vanessa Patry was able to chip the ball over the head of keeper Amie Kern (Saylorsburg, PA/Stroudsburg), giving UMass the 2-1 advantage.

GW would fight back though, and again earned the equalizer. In the 66th minute, Keara Mehlert (Chevy Chase, MD/Stone Ridge School) had her shot deflected by UMass keeper Kristin Walker. Sophomore Dara Rosen (Rockville, MD/Richard Montgomery) gathered the loose ball and placed it in the lower right corner, leveling the match at two as she recorded her first goal of 2007.

With the match knotted 2-2, the teams played a pair of 10-minute, sudden-death overtimes, but neither side was able to find the back of the net. Kern recorded a career-high 16 saves in her final match at GW, including three in the second overtime.

George Washington started the 2007 season 3-0 for the first time in program history and thrice won two consecutive matches.
