Women's Lacrosse Closes Season With 9-7 Victory at Saint Joseph's

April 18, 2008

Final Stats

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Sophomores Taylor Donohue and Mia Breheny each recorded hat tricks to lead the George Washington women's lacrosse team to a 9-7 conference victory at Saint Joseph's in the Colonials' season finale Friday.

GW finishes the 2008 season 5-11 overall, 3-4 in league play after winning its last two Atlantic 10 Conference matches. Saint Joseph's drops to 2-4 in the A-10, 7-8 overall, and is also out of contention for a postseason bid.

The Colonials trailed for much of the game, but junior Katherine Sampson, Breheny and Donohue scored consecutive goals with less than 18 minutes remaining to post the come-from-behind victory.

Sampson tied the game at 7-7 with an unassisted strike at the 17:11 mark and Breheny netted the game-winner just over four minutes later. Donohue sealed the victory with 3:38 left on senior Laura Wunk's team-leading 21st assist of the season. GW led just once - 1-0 on a Breheny goal 1:42 into the game - before Breheny's go-ahead goal.

Saint Joseph's twice held two-goal advantages in the first half, but senior Lindsay Melvin and Donohue tallied back-to-back goals in a span of 45 seconds to bring the Colonials even at the half, 4-4.

The Hawks took a one-goal lead three times in the second half, but each time the Colonials responded until breaking through with the 3-0 game-ending rally.

Sophomore Laura Dominiak led GW with three ground balls and two caused turnovers, followed by junior Alaska Burr's two ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Senior Laura Wunk had a goal and an assist in her final collegiate outing, while classmates Melvin (goal) and Hayley McDonough (assist) had one point apiece. Senior Kristin Karcsh failed to score a point for the first time in 13 games, but finishes her career as the second leading scorer in school history with 115 goals and 165 points.

Katelyn Honeyford ends her career in the Top 6 all-time at GW in ground balls (t6th - 107), caused turnovers (3rd - 83) and draw controls (3rd - 85).

Senior goalkeeper Caitlin Garman made six saves to earn her 30th career victory and up her program-record career saves total to 493.
