Four Colonials Reach Double-Digits in 70-43 Rout of Rhode Island

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Four players scored in double-figures, led by junior Jessica Adair's 12 points, as No. 13/12 George Washington advanced to the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship with a 70-43 victory over 10th-seeded Rhode Island Saturday.

Senior All-America candidate Kimberly Beck added 11 second-half points and seniors Whitney Allen and Sarah-Jo Lawrence chipped in 10 apiece as the Colonials moved to the conference semifinals for the sixth consecutive season and 16th time in 26 all-time appearances.

GW (25-5) closed the first half on a 25-5 run to turn a one-point deficit into a 19-point lead at halftime. Lawrence (10), Allen (8) and junior Antelia Parrish (8) combined for 26 of the Colonials' first-half points.

Down 12-11 with 15:30 left in the first period, GW scored 15 consecutive points, sparked by a pair of fast-break layups from Allen, to assume a 26-12 edge at the 7:16 mark. The Colonials held the Rams scoreless for nearly nine minutes on 0-for-10 shooting during the run.

The Colonials broke the game open further with three consecutive three-pointers - two from Beck and another from redshirt junior Lisa Steele - to extend their lead to 53-25 with 12:12 remaining.

GW's lead never dipped below 20 points the rest of the way as the Colonials improved to 16-0 this season when allowing less than 60 points.

Adair moved to within five points of becoming the 25th player in GW history to score 1,000 points. Beck and Lawrence already reached the milestone this season. Beck had six assists to bring her career total to 695.

 

 

Rhode Island (13-18), which upset seventh-seeded St. Bonaventure in the first round, was led by Amanda McGrew's nine points.

GW faces third-seeded Xavier in Sunday's late semifinal, which will air live on CSTV at approximately 2:30 pm.
