WASHINGTON, DC -- Former George Washington University rower Jon D'Alba ('07) won the U.S. Rowing National Team trials earlier this month and has been named to the 2007 U.S. National Team. D'Alba will be competing in the lightweight quadruple sculls event at the 2007 World Rowing Championships in Munich, Germany, from Aug. 26 to Sept. 2.
D'Alba, who was the captain of the GW Men's Rowing team in 2005-06, was a standout oarsman at George Washington. In recognition of his contributions, the GW Athletic Department named D'Alba GW's Top Senior Male Athlete for the 2006-07 academic year. He was the 2007 recipient of the J. Dallas Shirley Outstanding Senior Male Athlete Award at George Washington University's annual Senior Honors Luncheon May 5. Additionally, D'Alba was a two-time recipient of the Assenza Award for extraordinary leadership, as voted by his teammates, in both his junior and senior years at GW.
This marks the second time that D'Alba has made the U.S. National Team. Prior to his senior year at GW, D'Alba finished fifth at the 2006 World Rowing Championships as a member of the U.S. Lightweight Eight. D'Alba is one of only two GW oarsmen (joining Aquil Abdullah, '95) to earn a spot on the U.S. National Team, and is the first one to do so while still rowing at GW.
A native of Berwyn, PA, D'Alba has been ranked among the top 5 lightweight male oarsmen in the country for the past two years. Last summer, he was named to the U.S. National Team in the lightweight men's eight. As a member of the GW crew, D'Alba competed at the 2006 World Rowing Championships in Eton, England. Graduating with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering in 2006, D'Alba will be focused on making the Senior National Team again and representing the U.S.A. at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
