Golf Takes Second at Rain-Dampened Navy Spring Invitational

ANNAPOLIS, MD -- GW's Sebastian Palomares and Tyler Wendelken each carded a three-over-par 145 to tie for third place, six strokes off the pace, in the 2008 Navy Spring Invitational Saturday and Sunday at Annapolis, MD. Sunday's final round was delayed and interrupted by heavy rains at the par-71, 6,528-yard U.S. Naval Academy Golf Course.
Both GW and Navy sent two teams to compete in the tournament. The Navy B Team, which tied Iona with identical 589s, was declared the winner of the event after scores between the fifth man on each team gave the Midshipmen a two-stroke advantage. Lightning and a tornado watch scuttled plans for a playoff between Navy and Iona. For NCAA statistical purposes, a college's B Team does not count in the final standings of a tournament, therefore, GW's A team will claim a second-place finish to Iona.
The GW B team placed sixth (598) while the Navy A team was ninth with a 610 in the 18-team field.
Palomares fired a three-under-par 68 on Saturday to take the lead after one round but carded a six-over 77 in the rain on Sunday. Wendelken shot a 74 Saturday and was even-par with a second-round 71 Sunday.
Navy's Ben Hayes won the individual title with a three-under-par 139, the only player to shoot under par. A trio of Colonials, Lewis Sturdy, Eddie Newland and Brendan Barrack, tied for seventh place, each with a four-over 146.
"I'm very pleased with our results today despite the adverse weather conditions," said GW coach Scott Allen. "The results show how deep our team is and I'm going to have a very difficult decision to make about which five players to take to the A-10 Championship in a couple of weeks."
The Colonials next play in the 54-hole Virginia Cavalier Classic, April 26-27, at Birdwood Golf Club in Charlottesville, VA.
