Late Inning GW Rally Falls Short In Loss to Temple

May 3, 2008

Box Score

ARLINGTON, VA - Temple scored eight runs in the top of the first inning and then held off a George Washington rally in the final innings as they downed the Colonials by a final of 11-5 Saturday afternoon in the second game of their Atlantic 10 Conference three-game series at Barcroft Park in Arlington, VA. Trailing 11-0, GW scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth to close the gap, but was unable to complete the comeback. Temple's starter Tom Dolan pitched six shut-out innings and allowed just two hits, both infield singles.

GW sophomore Chris Holland (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake) was 2-for-3 with his first career home run, a two-run shot to left field in the eighth. Andrew Abokhair (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) was 2-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.

GW starter LHP Bobby Lucas (Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall College) suffered his first loss of the season to fall to 5-1 after surrendering those eight runs in the first inning.

The Owls seized control of Saturday's contest early with eight runs in the top of the first as they sent 12 batters to the plate and recorded six hits, including Stan Orzechowski's three-run single to left-center. Temple added two unearned runs in the top of the sixth, making it 10-0 with Steve Nikorak's RBI-double. Another unearned run in the seventh made it 11-0 in favor of the visiting Owls.

After struggling to get anything going against Temple starter Tom Dolan, GW began hitting once they faced the Owls' bullpen, scoring five in the bottom of the eighth. Curtis Eward (Oakton, VA/Oakton) led-off with a double down the leftfield line and then was driven home on Chris Holland's homer. A single and throwing error by Temple put runners on second and third for freshman Brendon Kelliher (Sandwich, MA/Sandwich), who delivered with an RBI-double into leftfield. Two consecutive RBI-groundouts made it 11-5 in favor of Temple, but that was as close as GW would get Saturday afternoon.

George Washington (23-24, 9-11 A-10) and Temple (21-23, 12-8 A-10) will play the rubber-game of their series Sunday, May 4, at 12:00 p.m. Before the game, GW will celebrate Senior Day, in which they will honor Andrew Abokhair, Brian Frazier and Charlie Kruer.
