Men's Water Polo Places Third at Eastern Championships

Nov. 18, 2007

CAMBRIDGE, MA - Sophomore John-Claude Wright scored a hat trick to lead the George Washington men's water polo team to a 7-5 come-from-behind victory over Harvard in the third-place game of the CWPA Eastern Championships at the Crimson's Blodgett Pool Sunday.

GW's third place finish at Easterns is the best in program history. The Colonials finish the 2007 season 12-18 overall, including three victories over Top 20 teams and their first appearance in the Eastern semifinals.

Junior driver David Zenk and senior goalkeeper Chris Whittam were named to the Eastern All-Tournament Team. Zenk had three goals in GW's quarterfinal upset of fourth-seed No. 17 Brown and added an assist in Sunday's victory against sixth-seed Harvard. Whittam totaled 31 saves during the three-game tournament.

The Colonials trailed Harvard by two goals at the close of both the first and second quarters and went down 5-4 midway through the third period, but rebounded late. Junior Gustavo Canto gave GW its first lead of the game with a counterattack goal with 6:52 to play. Wright tacked on an insurance goal 1:46 later as Whittam and the defense blanked the Crimson in the final stanza.

Senior John Jennings, junior Sergei Shev and sophomore Nick Archambault also scored against Harvard, with Shev and Canto also chipping in assists. Whittam finished with eight saves.

GW was defeated, 15-3, by top-seed No. 10 Navy in Saturday's semifinal. Wright, Canto and redshirt junior Nick Eddy netted goals, while Whittam made 12 saves and senior Justin Licht turned away one shot.
