Women's Rowing Takes Second at Lake Wheeler

April 10, 2006

DURHAM, NC -- The GW Women's Rowing team competed in the Lake Wheeler Invitational Saturday in Durham, NC. The Varsity Eight and Novice Eight both put in strong performances in finishing second in their respective races. The 2,000-meter race was run in a 5-10 mph crosswind.

"The Lake Wheeler Invite was a great race for us," GW head coach Rob McCracken said. "It provided us with an opportunity to compete against several teams from outside our region and also exposed our student-athletes to a heats-to-finals progression system like they will see at the A-10 Championship and the Eastern Sprints. Overall, I was pleased with the fact that we successfully executed the things that we worked on during practice last week. All of the varsity boats took a step closer to putting together a complete race. I was especially pleased with the varsity eight which had two really good races. If we as a team can continue to improve every week, then we should be in an excellent position to turn in some solid performances at the Eastern Sprints Regatta in May."

The Colonials' lineups were: Varsity 4: cox: Gina Fernandes; 4: Laura Crotty; 3: Emily Esman; 2: Megan Lind; 1: Sarah Gall 2nd Varsity 8: cox: Sara Neugroschel; 8: MaryKate Martelon; 7: Jenna Feistritzer; 6: Ashley Larrimore; 5: Julia King; 4: Brandi Kerrigan; 3: Emily Geise; 2: Christine Hamann; 1: Ashley McCawley Varsity 8: cox: Mansi Shah; 8; Liz Cavanaugh; 7: Angie Costales; 6: Hilary Goldberg; 5: Kate Austin; 4: Liz Gordon; 3: Courtney Fawcett; 2: Jean Williamson; 1: Angela Wunderli. Novice 8: cox: Ally McDougal; 8: Bess Austin; 7: Katelyn Janicz; 6: Jenn Phillips; 5: Krista Santilli; 4: Alex Byrd; 3: Katelyn Radack; 2: Amanda Browne; 1: Emily Roseman.

The women next host Georgetown on Saturday, April 15 on the Potomac River. The winner takes home the Class of 1998 Cup.
