WASHINGTON, DC -- The U.S. Naval Academy amassed 46 points to win the Gilbert H. Hood, Jr. Point Trophy at the19th Annual George Washington Invitational Crew Classic on a rain-soaked Saturday on the Potomac River. It marked the seventh time the Midshipmen have won the point trophy. Traditionally a combined men's and women's event, this year's Classic consisted of men's crews only due to scheduling conflicts. Georgetown was the runner-up with 34 points followed by 2005 champion, Virginia, with 31 points. The host Colonials of George Washington placed fourth with 22 points. Points were awarded based on finish in the grand final races and petite finals.
Steady rain with temperatures in the 50s and a moderate 10-15 mph quartering tailwind made for fast racing conditions. The Navy crews took four first-place finishes and a pair of second-place finishes.
In the marquee race of the day, the Navy men's varsity eight narrowly defeated Georgetown by 1.3 seconds to win the Oliver T. Carr Bowl given to the fastest men's varsity eight shell. The Midshipmen completed the 2,000-meter course in 5:53.6--five seconds faster than last year's winning time.
The next race for the GW men will be Saturday, April 15 at Madison, WI against Minnesota, as well as the host Wisconsin Badgers, of the Big Ten Conference.
